Spain Food

Expect extra virgin olive oils, chic peas and lentils, cheese and wine. Expect parsley and rice almonds, loads of garlic and onions, saffron and cinnamon, and fresh fruit. Expect very fresh fish and seafood, game and cured hams, sausages and fresh breads, beef and chorizo. Now add to that a dash of regional diversity, topped with Spanish conviviality, and you get a pretty accurate picture of Spain food.

In Spain, everything from the arts and letters to gastronomy is rich and diverse. Each valley, each village, and each region take pride in their own recipes and the unique way they prepare their dishes from the simplest to the most complex.

Spain food is a reflection of the many cultural influences brought to the Iberian Peninsula. One of the major influences on Spain food was the 781-year Moorish presence on the Peninsula. The Arab conquerors, and later rulers, brought most of the exotic ingredients found in Spain food, including saffron, almonds, and peppers. They also introduced sweets and pastries. All these were incorporated to create refreshing dishes such as the cold almond and vegetable soups still popular today.

Ziryab, a 10th-century Moorish chef, is considered among the world’s culinary pioneers. He is credited with introducing to Europe the Arab fashion for eating a standard sequence of dishes - soup to dessert.

But aside from the sequence, the Moors also left another legacy for which Spain food is best known. The tapa, or Spanish hors d’oeuvre, is considered as Spain’s most popular culinary innovation. The name of this particular Spain food was derived from tapar, meaning “to cover.”

The early form of the tapa was said to have been pieces of ham or cheese that were laid over glasses of wine. The purpose was purportedly to keep the flies out and also to keep stagecoach drivers sober.

Today, the tapa is generally taken as appetizers, eaten before the main course during lunch or dinner. However, in some parts of Spain, especially in the south in Andalucia where it originated, many people regard tapas as meals in themselves.

Soups are important Spanish dishes. Each region has its own version of the standard Spanish soup with different ingredients and different manner of preparation. If you are in or around Madrid, the standard soup is the sopa de ajo, or soup garlic. This form of Spain food is made with water, oil, garlic, paprika, bread, and cured ham. If you move north, however, the standard soup becomes the sopa de pescado, or fish soup.

Another important Spain food is the gazpacho, another soup that originated in Valencia, Spain. This is a cold blend of tomatoes, water, garlic, bread, and vegetables. The modern gazpacho is made in a blender. But for a more authentic taste of this excellent example of Spain food, prepare the meal by hand in an earthenware mortar.

Fall Head Over Heels with Yosemite Waterfalls

Waterfalls are physical formations of the earth in the form of flowing water from an edge of a cliff down to a river or lake. These are located in between massive rocks or in between mountains where rapid erosion occurs. Also, one of the causes of the formation of waterfalls is the melting off of glaciers. The process of glaciation eventually led to the formation of running streams. This process has caused the formation of the large Yosemite Waterfalls in Yosemite Valley.

Yosemite Valley is not only rich with forests and meadows. Yosemite Waterfalls complete the elements present of an artist’s painting. These waterfalls draw individuals near like metals to a magnet. These waterfalls not only complete the picture, but give movement and life as well.

The Yosemite Waterfalls comprise the eight large and very beautiful waterfalls. These are the Upper Yosemite Falls, Lower Yosemite Falls, Nevada Falls, Vernal Falls, Illilouette Falls, Bridalveil Falls, Ribbon Falls and lastly the Silver Strand Falls. The Upper Yosemite Falls measures 1430 feet with the Yosemite Creek as its watercourse. The Lower Yosemite Falls is comparatively lesser in height than Upper Yosemite Falls. It measures only 320 feet with the same Yosemite Creek as its watercourse. The Nevada Falls is the most isolated among the major waterfalls measuring 594 feet with the Merced River as its watercourse. The Vernal Falls is broad and square measuring 317 feet with the Merced River as its waterway. The least appreciated of some tourist is the Illilouette Falls which can’t be seen from any road and measures 370 feet with the Illiloutte Creek as its watercourse.

Another stream of the Yosemite Waterfalls is the famous Bridalveil Falls which measures 620 feet and has the Bridalveil Creek as its channel. The Ribbon Falls has a measurement of 1612 feet in height and the Ribbon Creek serves as its watercourse. Finally, the Silver Strand Falls measures 1170 feet with the Meadow Brook as its waterway.

The Yosemite Waterfalls are as welcoming as the other magnificent spots of the valley. Tourists interested in hiking over the top of the waterfalls and enjoying the view just right below can have a pleasant time admiring these waterfalls. Although the Nevada Falls prohibits hikers from swimming in the pool of water, the beauty of the falls is mesmerizing to the eyes. The waterfalls attract all kinds of people and the invitation to appreciate its splendor is open to all.

Reno Balloon Races

The Reno Balloon Races started off way back in 1982, with only twenty balloons participating. Today after eighteen years, it is one of most awaited events every September of the year, with over a hundred strong balloons partaking in the occasion. The event gives a delightful touch with various vibrant balloon colors all up in the air, and a thrilling and breathtaking feeling as the liftoff begins and the hot-air balloons take their flight.

To fully experience the occasion, make sure not to miss the “Dawn Patrol” or some call it the “Glow Show”, which is a beautiful show of glowing and lit balloons twinkling and flying along choreographed music against the dark Nevada sky, is definitely an unforgettable event that every visitor should not miss, you might want to be in the park well before the 5:30 a.m. launch, or you won’t find a good spot to watch the event.

The Tissue Paper Balloon Launch in union with the Washoe County School District is another highlight of the event, where students launch their Tissue Paper Balloons into the air. This amusing sight takes place on a Friday only at 9:30 in the morning. The Balloon Boulevard during the occasion is where one can find food, souvenirs, and warm drinks. The Balloon Blackjack is another highlight of the event where pilots try their hand at throwing markers at jumbo-size playing cards on the field as they fly in the air, with those hitting 21 or closest, at the centermost part of the cards win the “hand of the day”.

In the early morning of Reno Balloon Races, is much like a great freeing feeling while the air briskly releases hints of fall, and seeing acres of landscape filled with energetic-colored balloons. This great race is free to spectators and is always scheduled for the first Friday through Sunday after Labor Day. Weather during these times can normally be described as benign, but dressing in layers is suggested as the mornings can be very cold before dawn. However, once the sun goes up, mercury rises fast, so no more worries with layers of clothing. The Rancho San Rafael has been the perfect place for the Reno Balloon Races since it first set-off. The park has ample space for the balloons to spread out as well as enough room for spectators.

The Reno Balloon Races are of five types and vary in rules and ways: the Hare and Hound-Hunting Balloon Style; Balloon Blackjack; Fly in Task- Judge declared Goal; Fly in Task - Calculated Rate of Approach Task; and Fly in Task - Maximum/Minimum Distance Double Drop.

The goal of the Great Reno Balloon Races is to provide a safe, premier, family-oriented and tourist-attractive, visually spectacular event that celebrates the joy of flight whilst remaining free to the public. The Reno Balloon Races have indeed been a great attraction for Septembers in Reno, so the next time you visit Reno do it on this month and be a part of the fantastic celebration.
