One of the most fascinating things about Spain is its culture – rich, distinct, and itself a melting pot of Moorish influences, Roman philosophies, and Christian aspirations. Who hasn’t heard of it? Who hasn’t heard of it and not related it to Spain culture? Bullfighting is certainly one of the most well-known, and perhaps the most controversial, of Spanish customs.

No fiesta in Spain is ever complete without a corrida de toros (bullfighting) or the Toro Bravo, the species of bull found only in Spain and conserved for purposes of bullfighting. Although considered by sports to foreigners to Spain culture, fans of bullfighting insist that it is an art of the highest form – depicting the eternal struggle between man and beast; the civilized man against his primal nature; the weakness of body and the strength of spirit.

Fiesta

If the Flamenco is a symbol of passionate Spain and bullfighting, the courage of its people, the fiesta is Spain culture’s symbol of gaiety and pageantry. Spanish fiestas are held in honor of a patron saint. Often, a region may have more than one patron saint, and each one of them must have a fiesta offered in their honor.

Food is a common sight during this aspect of Spain culture. It is here that you will get a glimpse of the diversity of Spanish cuisine. Although basically a religious event, the Spanish fiesta also has its pagan roots, a reflection of Spain’s local early customs that was tided over the centuries.

Archdiocese of San Antonio

The wide scope of the Archdiocese of San Antonio only mirrors the strength of Catholicism’s clout all over the city, which is less than surprising actually knowing that San Antonio emerged as a city as a product of the Spanish missionaries who built missions and settlements in the area.

After the famous “fall of the Alamo”, and the subsequent defeat of Spain in Mexico, it realized its incapability to maintain the missions. Hence, the governor of Mexico at the time (the middle of the 19th century), tried to sell the missions including its properties to the Natives who could neither afford nor make use of them.

After 30 years of bidding, the missions were left under the jurisdiction of the Catholic Church and were strengthened by a decree from then President Abraham Lincoln. The diocese of San Antonio was erected in 1874 and was raised to archdiocese in 1926. After the battles were won and lost, a harmonious coexistence of Spanish and English citizens existed in the name of the Archdiocese of San Antonio. They held pastoral meetings in both languages.

This turnover led to the great expanse of the Archdiocese of San Antonio that comprises the counties of Val Verde, Edwards, Real, Kerr, Bandera, Gillespie, Kendall, Comal, Kinney, Uvalde, Medina, Bexar, Guadalupe, Gonzales, Wilson, Frio, Atascosa, Karnes, and down the south to McMullen. The entire archdiocese encompasses 27,841 square miles.

The spread of Catholicism in the greater area of San Antonio and the state of Texas as a whole, can be largely attributed to the discovery of the San Antonio river by Spanish friars, and the eventual transformation of pagan beliefs from the Natives to the Catholic ideals.

Currently, Most Reverend Jose H. Gomez, STD is headed of the Archdiocese of San Antonio, together with Most Reverend Thomas J. Flanagan, DD, Most Reverend Patrick J. Surek, DD, Most Reverend Patrick F. Flores, DD, and Most Reverend Bernard F. Popp.

The archdiocese’s jurisdiction is composed of 139 parishes, 34 missions, 2 pastoral centers, four colleges and universities, three high schools (diocesan and parish), 34 elementary schools (diocesan and parish), as well as many other entities under the Catholic faith.

The relatively large span of the archdiocese of San Antonio is a symbolic relic of the Spanish influence still reigning in the area.
