Seattle Parks and Recreation

Prospects of living in Seattle could never be better. Everything is there, complete, with all the conveniences working to endow the healthiest lifestyle. Seattle has got splendid educational institutions; in fact the United States Bureau Survey of 2006 had shown that Seattle has the highest percentage of degree holders all over United States. Seattle holds a strong economy, thanks to the high technology revolution that’s taking place all over the are (especially Redmond and Belltown). And most of all and for the benefit of its inhabitants, Seattle also maintains a number of world renowned parks and recreational sites.

Parks, recreation, landmarks, and heritage sites; these city feature provides more than just additional profit. Unbeknownst to most, it contributes highly to the promotion of a locality’s culture. And yes, high culture directly benefits commerce, tourism and real estate are directly affected by substantial cultural ratings of a locality, which then generates profit. Profit, in terms of tax, allows more infrastructures built or a more involved way in preserving or promoting the cultural value of the place.

The numerous Seattle parks and recreation centers allows just that. Despite of the heavy boom of the economy and the skyrocketing prices of land values alongside Seattle Center and even farther in Fremont and Queen Anne, Seattle’s rich cultural heritage are painstakingly kept from the prying hands of developers. In fact, it was during 1963 when the proposal to demolish the Pike Place Market took place that was met with such an outcry that the plan was shelved. While it should bring in more capital to the area (the marketplace was to be replaced by a hotel, a grand apartment building and several blocks of office buildings), the communities opted for the cultural heritage of Pike Place Market so that the market buildings were brought into public ownership and The Pike Place Market Public Development Authority was created.

That’s one valiant communal effort against the face of bulldozers and cranes and money. Suffice to say, Pike Place Market still stands today, and to commemorate that event the Victor Steinbrueck Park was erected. But developers’ battle over Seattle land did not end that day. It happened on several occasions, one of them with the Kubota Gardens, and the communities once again backed the property against a league of condominium developers.

There are now several Seattle parks and recreational areas all over Seattle. Most of them have an equally interesting story to share. But culture isn’t only expressed in landmarks. Seattle relays its rich culture over festivities and fairs. One of them is the “Bite of Seattle” that attracts a good number (around 450,000) of gourmands every year to taste the fresh cuisine in Seattle.

Seattle Seahawks

No, it isn’t a bird specie or a marine creature. Seattle Seahawks is actually a Seattle-based American football team that became a member of the National Football League in 1976, the same time the Tampa Bay Buccaneers did.

The Seattle Seahawks earned its nickname from a fan contest. The term “seahawks” was a suggestion of 151 fans out of the 20,365 that sent entries. The remaining 1,742 comprise the other names suggested. The team’s logo is a ferocious Native American hawk. The upper half of its body, including the beak and face, is dark blue, while the lower half is a lighter shade. The eyes of the hawk are neon green. These make up the team’s colors of navy blue, pacific blue, neon green, and white.

Fate wasn’t kind to the Seattle Seahawks in its early yeas. This expansion team has to contend with a misfortune even before it had the chance to play its first game. The Seattle Seahawks’ owner, Lloyd W. Nordstrom, suffered a heart attack and died on January 20, 1976. Nordstrom didn’t get to see his team play in a sold-out Kingdome on September 12 of the same year. The Seattle Seahawks gave a solid performance under Coach Jack Patera, but lost to the St. Louis Cardinals with a 30-24 score. The team lost four succeeding games but triumphed over their co-expansion team, the Buccaneers, 13-10 on October 17 in Tampa. The Seattle Seahawks won a home-court game three weeks later against the Atlanta Falcons 30-13. These are the only games they won in their first season which is typical of an expansion team. Their record was 2 wins and 12 losses.

The Seattle Seahawks has had five coaches until Mike Holmgren took over in 1999. The past mentors were: Jack Patera (1976-1982); Mike McCormack (1982); Chuck Knox (1983-1991); Tom Flores (1992-1994); and Dennis Erickson (1995-1999).

There are three stadiums that served as the Seattle Seahawk’s own; the Kingdome (1976-1999; Husky Stadium (2000-2001); and Qwest Field (2002-Present) which is also known as the Seattle Seahawks’ Stadium.

The Seattle Seahawks were never Super Bowl Champions in all of its existence, however it had a single Super Bowl appearance in 2005. The team won four Division Championships which took place in 1988, 1999, 2004, and 2005. The Seattle Seahawks had a total of eight appearances in the playoffs which were on 1983, 1984, 1987, 1988, 1999, 2003, 2004, and 2005.

Even if there are several ordeals that the Seattle Seahawks had to deal with, the team still has its share of players that were good enough to make it to the Hall of Fame; Franco Harris in 1990, Steve Largent in 1995, Carl Eller in 2004, and Warren Moon in 2006. With Mike Holmgren in the helm, Seattle Seahawks may have more Hall of Famers to come.

The Seattle Mariners

Are you a big baseball fan? Then the Seattle Mariners probably do not need that much introduction. However, for those who are just getting acquainted with the sports, knowing the most important details about the teams is necessary to better understand the game.

The Seattle Mariners is a member team of the Major League Baseball. This Seattle-based team is in the West Division of the American League. The Seattle Mariners’ existence was not a planned thing. The team was actually a consequence of a 1970 lawsuit for breach of contract filed by the City of Seattle, King County, and the State of Washington, headed by attorney general Slade Gorton, against the American League. The complainants asked for %32 million in damages as a result of the purchase and transfer of the Seattle Pilots to Milwaukee. The lawsuit went on until 1976 when the American League proposed an expansion baseball franchise to Seattle in exchange for dropping the charges. The Seattle Mariners’ franchise, as well as that of the Toronto Blue Jays, was finalized in 1976. The Pilots, whose name was changed to Brewers, played for the competitor — the National League.

The Seattle Mariners made their sold-out debut game on April 6, 1977. The Kingdome, which was originally considered as the home of the Seattle Pilots, was the venue of the Seattle Mariners’ first game. Despite the crowd of 57,762, it still lost to the California Angels at 7-0. The period from the 70’s to 80’s was not a good one for the Seattle Mariners. It finished last or nearly last in ten out of its initial thirteen seasons in its division. The Seattle Mariners never had a winning season until1991.

Even with the presence of star players, the Seattle Mariners still performed poorly and went on to lose more games. Its first winning season happened in 1991, but was only enough to let the team finish 5th place. Although 1994 marked the team’s better luck, fate had to bring in another trick. Ceiling tiles went crashing down from the roof of the Kingdome. This prompted the team to go on road trips – its longest one ever – with 20 games within 21 days. The team felt that being together during the road trips and managing to look beyond all the challenges have greatly helped in making them achieve their 1995-season success.

The Seattle Mariners is owned by Nintendo of America. While the team has its own Mariners Hall of Famers such as Dave Niehaus, Alvin Davis, and Jay Buhner, only one player made it to the Baseball Hall of Fame – Gaylord Perry (1982-1983). Despite all the misfortunes that the team went through, it still is holding on with that “refusing to give up” attitude.
