Even if San Antonio is not the capital city of Texas, it is still known as the heart of the state. Otherwise known as the Alamo City, it houses the headquarters of four of the United State’s military bases. And with a pleasant climate all throughout the year, San Antonio, Texas provides residents and tourists plenty of opportunity to engage in various cultural and recreational endeavors.
With more than one million residents, San Antonio, Texas is now the second most populated city in the state, and the seventh in the whole of United States. It occupies more than 400 square miles of the South Texas’ northern edge.
San Antonio was given such name because Spanish explorers settled on it on St. Anthony de Padua’s feast day on 1691. It initially served as a military post. Thus, San Antonio, Texas had and still has intensive military presence. Right now, it is home to Lackland Air Force Base, Brooks City Base, Randolph Air Force Base, and Fort Sam Houston.
The South Texas Medical Center, the biggest and the sole medical research facility and health care provider in the entire South Texas region is located in San Antonio, Texas. The center is a corporation of several huge hospitals, clinics, and educational institutions which is accountable for the successful multi-billion dollar biomedical industry of the city.
San Antonio, Texas offers a bit of everything. History fanatics will delight in the numerous ancient attractions of the city. The outdoorsy types will find their own interesting activities to indulge in. For those who are young at heart, or who are truly so, there are a lot of family-inspired attractions available. With its vast collection of museums, theme parks, theatres, and botanical gardens, everyone will definitely find something of interest.
Considered as a “melting pot” of cultures, San Antonio, Texas was originally settled in by people from the nations which ruled throughout the state’s history. Thus, Texas is know as the “six-flag state” as it was controlled by the following: Spain (1519-1685/1690-1821); France (1685-1690); Mexico (1821-1836); as a Republic (1836-1845); in the Confederacy (1861-1865); in the United States (1845-1861/1865-present).
A lot of people from various parts of the world have chosen to live in San Antonio, Texas. Even military people who were at some point, stationed in one of the military bases in San Antonio have opted to retire in the city.
San Antonio, Texas is easy to fall in love with. And chances are, once you go there for a visit, you might just fall hard – like most others.
